Duma Works is recruiting a Business development and  Fundraising Manager for one of our clients. The hiring company is a non-profit firm that deals with farm produce to ensure food security in Africa.

Location: Nairobi,very little field travel required

Annual contract, renewable based on successful performance

Overview of the role


The Business Development and Fundraising Manager will support the company to develop, manage and pursue program funding partners and new business opportunities across its areas of operation (Kenya, Tanzania) and other areas of Sub-Saharan Africa into which it may grow with new funding support.
The Business Development & Fundraising Manager will report to the Kenya Country Director for development of new business/new program funding in Kenya, and to the Managing Director for development related to Tanzania or new countries in SSA region.
He/she will work closely with the Director of Organizational Development and the Finance-Administration Manager, as well as the company’s key personnel in field and Program Management positions

Objective 1: Fundraising and grant writing

Key activities & responsibilities to achieve this objective:

  • Strategically assess and help select new potential donors to approach, based on their areas of
    interest and priority
  • Develop and maintain relationships with both new and existing donors and respond to their
    requests regularly and keep updating them about the work of the organization
  • Monitor donors, trends, opportunities, calls for proposals and make recommendations for company
    funding strategy and applications
  • Prepare concept notes, project ideas and project proposals for specific donors/programs and ensure their timely submission
  • Work with the Reporting/Evaluation and Communications leads to develop strategic information and communications materials based on the company’s achievements and successes in past and existing programs
  • Undertake independent research in finding alternative resources and developing business
    opportunities for long-term sustainability of the organization (long term sub-objective)
  • Organize or provide assistance in organizing any fundraising events for the organization

Objective 2: Represent the company and develop meaningful partnerships 

Key activities & responsibilities to achieve this objective:

  • Establish commercial linkages/partnerships with farm input and agrochemical companies
  • Deliver frameworks for the creation of business development plans for individual partners
  • Maintain an updated tracking tool for forecasting and tracking partnership engagement
  • Pro-actively identify new and different business opportunities that will provide increased
    benefits for our VBAs and farmers
  • Design an effective system to provide accurate reports on existing and new business
  • Attend and represent and sell company’s concepts at development events and forums along with
    networking opportunities and other relevant meetings/seminars

Reporting Responsibilities

Reports/documentation this role produces

  • Concept notes and completed grant proposals including budgets
  • Promotional materials such as generic concept notes, website and social media pitches and updates
  • Reports on field activities, summary of Business Development activities on a regular basis

Position Requirements


  • Master’s level qualifications in a relevant field (including Business Administration, International Development, AgriBusiness or other Agriculturally related field)

Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years relevant work experience
  • Understanding of Sub-Saharan and especially Eastern African agricultural development
    situation, key players in funding and supporting this development
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication skills
  • Flawless written expression in professional English
  • Strong analytical and organization skills
  • Business planning and proposal writing skills
  • Understanding design and implementation of project management
  • Need assessment and research skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience using Microsoft Powerpoint, Word and Excel
  • High level contract negotiation experience
  • Proven record of generating new business in a similar context
